Information Obesity

Curious?

Most organizations suffer from a glut of disorganized information. Their capacity for producing information far exceeds the ability to process and use it. And yet most organisations are oblivious to this fact!

The capacity for producing information far exceeds the ability to process and use it

It's a subject that I feel very strongly about - organizations nearly always think in terms of IT solution to information-related problems, and this topsy-turvy approach results in vast quantities of information that are hardly used.

Several years ago I read a book by David Shenk called "Data Smog". It was published in 1997, and when I read it I remember being impressed by the author's condemnation of a worldwide accumulation of unused data. As far as I know, Shenk originated the phrase Information Obesity. Companies are quite simply consuming more information than they need.

Information Obesity (DVD)

Information Obesity DVD

What causes information obesity? And how can an organization achieve a healthy, balanced diet of information?

Most organizations suffer from a glut of disorganized information. In November 2004 I gave a keynote presentation at the prestigious Online Information 2004 conference - on the theme that organizations are not making enough use of their knowledge. Their capacity for producing information far exceeds the ability to process and use it. Returns From Information (RFI) are way too low.

The DVD includes the complete presentation, addressing the issues of information obesity in the corporate world today. It covers:

  • The causes of information obesity
  • Improving Returns From Information (RFI)
  • Making better use of organizational knowledge
